Genealogy at It's Best
For the avid student of New Jersey history, this publication offers a very complete listing of the Middlesex County Militia for the years 1791-1795. I believe that this book will appeal to those individuals who trace their roots to early New Jersey counties. The descriptions and rosters herein contained serve to give a detailed overview of both the pre and post Revolutionary families who settled in and around the counties of Middlesex, Somerset and Monmouth. Additionally, I believe that this book would be invaulable as an early history reference tool and should be a part of each public library's early history section.

The beauty, power and subtlety of solitary living
Illustrated by Peter Fiore and edited by Steven Schnur, Henry David's House introduces young readers ages 5 to 9 to the life, thought and writings of Henry David Thoreau. Text and illustration collaborate to showcase the beauty, power and subtlety of solitary living withing the context of a nature-oriented retreat as represented by Thoreau's tiny house in the woods and on the shore of Walden Pond. Henry David's House is an enthusiastically recommended addition to school and community picturebook collections.

Living the Simple Life.....
"Near the end of March I borrowed an axe and went down to the woods by Walden Pond and began to cut down some tall white pines for timber..." Author, Steven Schnur has chosen several wonderfully engaging passages from Henry David Thoreau's Walden, in this elegant picture book, and young readers will really get a vivid sense of the hard, yet rewarding work of building his house, the few possessions needed to live comfortably, the beauty of the changing seasons, and living the simple life in harmony with nature. "Sometimes, in a summer morning, having taken my accustomed bath, I sat in my sunny doorway from sunrise till noon, rapt in a revery, amidst the pines and hickories and sumachs, in undisturbed solitude and stillness, while the birds sang around or flitted noiseless through the house, until by the sun falling in at my west window, or the noise of some traveller's wagon on the distant highway, I was reminded of the lapse of time." Peter Fiore's lush and exquisite watercolor illustrations bring the splendor of Thoreau's existence at Walden Pond to life on the page, and together word and art evoke feelings of peace, quiet, and contentment. Perfect for readers 8-12, this book works well as a real aloud with D.B. Johnson's Henry Builds a Cabin, for younger children. With an editor's note at the end to fill in further biographical details about Thoreau and his time at Walden, Henry David's House is an evocative treasure to read, share, and most of all discuss. "We can never have enough of Nature."

A great introduction to Thoreau for young readers.
Henry David's House is a picturebook adaptation by Steven Schnur of a part of Henry David Thoreau's classic nature book "Walden", told with only a limited amount of editing. Beautiful, slightly abstract yet full-color illustrations by Peter Fiore bring this classic thinker's words to vibrant life for young readers. Henry David's House is a superb introduction to a literary masterpiece for young readers, and its final message, "We can never have enough of Nature," reverberates in the hearts of all ages. Highly recommended for family, school, and community library picturebook collections.

Middlesex
Published in Digital by Farrar, Straus, & Giroux ()
Author: Jeffrey Eugenides

Ended too quickly.
I enjoyed this book. I wish that we had spent more time with Cal after the discovery of her true sexual identity - I wanted to learn more about how s/he coped with the discovery. I felt the book screeched to a halt a bit too quickly. That said, it was a good read, interesting and well written.

Sorry, Can't Tell You....
I have been asked countless times what this book is about. Sorry, I can't tell you. This isn't a book about one thing. This isn't a book about a few things. This book covers more than just a life, more than just one lifetime. I loved "The Virgin Suicides", and I figured that I wouldn't be able to go wrong with another Eugenides book, even though I wasn't quite sure about the subject. Hermaphrodite? Greece? Detroit? Not things I'm that versed on, or ever thought I was that interested in. The book starts with a man named Cal, who, the first of his life, was known as a girl, named Caliope. Callie, as she was called, knew she was a little different, what she didn't know was that this was predetermined by not her parents, but by her grandparents and beyond. Hers is a struggle that not many people know, but one that will make you think of her/him for a long long time after finishing this book. Think you wouldn't enjoy reading a book about hermaphrodites, Greece, Turks, Detroit, incest, silkworms, Prohibition, race riots, runaways, Muslims, Hercules Hot Dogs, and an innocent confused girl/boy in the middle of it all, then you're wrong. You will.

Excellent writing and an engaging plot
This book takes on a fascinating topic -- that of a young girl named Calliope Stephanides who discovers she is a hermaphrodite and ultimately decides to take on the identity of a boy. The plot is surrounded with the tremendous cultural and social richness stemming from the family's Greek heritage.

In tracing the gene that resulted in Callie's hermaphrodite condition, the author takes us back to his Greek grandparents and their home in the village of Bithynios in Asia Minor. We follow them through the gripping political and human events of the early 1920's and their ultimate flight to the United States after Turkish troops invade the region. The reader is then immersed in a compelling tale of immigrant life in Detroit. Both the times and the characters are beautifully portrayed.

Eugenides is a gifted writer. Middlesex is alternatively serious and funny. The characters are extremely well developed. The plot line is extremely engaging on a variety of levels. And, Callie's act of self-discovery -- and ultimate conversion to the boy "Cal" teaches tolerance to those who might question such happenings.

Middlesex is 529 pages long so it is not for those seeking a quick read. However, if you like to immerse yourself in excellent writing, lively characters and an engaging plot, I recommend Middlesex highly.
